Chapter 16

Petra screamed as she opened her eyes, her body twisting off the floor as violent seizures wracked her. The same burning from the vampire’s bite was now magnified her body feeling like it had been doused in gasoline and set on fire. “Hold her!” Delilah yelled and Petra felt hands latch onto her arms and legs until the seizure passed.

She tried to catch her breath, to tell the other Guardians she was okay when another violent spasm caused her to arch. She screamed herself hoarse, her hands fisting so tightly her nails dug bloody crescents in her palms. Her muscles contracted into hard, violent cramps and she yelled again. “What the fuck is wrong with her?” Delilah yelled, her voice bordering on panic.

“Hold her down so I can give her the shot!” an unfamiliar voice yelled back. “God damn it! Her heart is going to stop if we don’t do something!”

Petra was dimly aware of Rachel laying on her to pin her to the floor. The world tilted dangerously, still cloaked in shades of black and gray. There was a pinch in her arm and the fire in her veins burned brighter before it slowly began to recede as the drugs worked against the poison in her blood. One eye was forced open, a light shined into it. “Color’s coming back,” the unfamiliar voice said and she could hear relief. “Let her up.”

The weight disappeared from her chest and the hands holding her arms and legs let go. Slowly, so slowly, color came back into the world until she could see Delilah’s blood splattered face hovering over her own. “You scared the shit out of me,” she said, her voice shaking as she used a rag to wipe sweat from Petra’s face.

“I think I scared shit out of me, too,” Petra said hoarsely. Her shirt clung to her body in cold, soaking wet patches. Her body was one throbbing ache as her muscles slowly loosened from their cramps. “Everything hurts. Can I have cigarette?”

Delilah looked at the Clarifier on Petra’s other side. “You were injected with some kind of toxin when the vampire bit you,” he explained gently, producing a stethoscope and sliding it under her shirt. He listened for a few moments before nodding to himself. “We have to take you back for observation, make sure the antidote knocked the poison out.”

Rachel scowled at him as he got to his feet. “What poison? What did that bitch do to her?”

The Clarifier suddenly became very interested in re-packing his medical kit. “We won’t know until we examine her.”

Stephanie came up behind him, Delilah and Rachel standing up over Petra to box him in. “Then how did you know to administer an antidote?” Delilah asked, her voice still shaking but this time from rage.

The Clarifier sighed. “It was a guess,” he said finally. “I can’t explain any further without the Priestess clearing you for a briefing. Now please step back so we can get your friend taken care of.”
